“WE WANT 6” Chants Erupt as NYCFC Dominate Orlando City in Home Opener
Chants of WE WANT 6 erupted throughout Yankee Stadium as New York City FC opened in dominant fashion against Orlando City FC. What started as a lively home opener quickly turned into a statement night.
It was a chippy match from the start as Orlando City SC found themselves in trouble early. A red card in the 16th minute forced Orlando down to ten men, shifting the momentum and setting the tone for the rest of the night. From that point on, it became an uphill battle for the Lions, with NYCFC controlling the pace and dictating play in front of an energized home crowd.
New York City FC wasted little time capitalizing on the advantage. Agustín Ojeda opened the scoring in the 21st minute, sparking the first big roar of the night and setting the tone for what was to come. Orlando struggled to regain any rhythm, constantly on the back foot as NYCFC pressed forward.
The pressure continued to build as Nicolás Fernández found the back of the net in the 42nd minute, doubling the lead and putting NYCFC firmly in control heading into halftime. Just before the whistle, Maxi Moralez calmly converted from the penalty spot in stoppage time, extending the lead to three and sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Any hope of a second half response from Orlando was quickly shut down.
Keaton Parks took over after the break, scoring twice in quick succession. With beautiful ball movement from the center of the pitch to the left and right, NYCFC remained patient in possession and created the opportunities that led to Parks finding the net in the 49th and 54th minutes, putting the match completely out of reach. Each goal only added to the growing energy inside the stadium, with fans now calling for even more as the scoreline continued to climb.
With full control of possession and a clear numerical advantage, NYCFC dictated the remainder of the match, cruising to a convincing 5 nil victory. It was a complete performance on both sides of the pitch and an emphatic way to open the season at home.
NYCFC now moves to 3-2-1 on the season and will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup against the Colorado Rapids this Saturday back at Yankee Stadium.
